Giro Sport Design continues to provide support to NICA through 2016!
Their support is primarily focused on NICA’s national coaching program, where Giro has been the longtime provider of NICA’s Official Coach Helmet. And to top things off…the helmet is undergoing a complete overhaul, with a new model and design! New coaches gaining an assistant coach or head coach license will receive the redesigned noodle-protector, while existing assistant/head coaches will be accommodated by request and based on available inventory. ETA: end of summer.
Giro Brings The NorCal League And LUNA Chix Pro Team Together
Giro’s Brand Development Manager, Eric Richter, describes the rendezvous:
We were honored to host a visit from the LUNA Pro Women’s Team at Giro headquarters just before the annual Sea Otter Classic. With two former NICA student-athletes on the LUNA team roster this year, we figured this was a great opportunity for the pro riders to meet the next generation of NICA riders. It was also a chance for the NICA student-athletes to gain some insight from the greatest riders in the sport and share a little bit of fun.
Thanks to the efforts of NICA staff, local school officials, and coaches, we introduced the LUNA team to more than 30 young riders from all over the Central Coast region. After a few high-fives and laughs, there was a 45-minute Q&A where the kids and coaches asked about everything from training and recovery, to what life is like traveling the world, to how to balance the pressure of competing to win with the need to keep riding fun. Then, the NICA student-athletes toured Giro’s world-class research and design facility, including the test lab where they learned about how helmets work and how they’re tested. And we wrapped up the day with a taco bar and some pretty serious head-to-head racing on Big Wheels in the parking lot.
At the end of the afternoon, everyone came away with a smile and a few stories to tell. We’re so grateful to the LUNA team and NICA for their commitment to excellence, and their shared belief that riding is one of the best parts of a great life.
Grinduro is back!
Voted “Event of the Year” by the Design and Innovation Awards committee, Grinduro is expanding onto two continents for 2016. The unique format of Grinduro combines the best elements of a mountain bike enduro with a gravel grinder-style road race. And riding bikes all day is only half the fun of Grinduro. The festivities include two days of camping, gourmet food, live music, and an art and bike exhibit featuring some of the best handmade bikes.
NICA’s Executive Director, Austin McInerny, participated in last year’s inaugural Grinduro with his wife, Celeste, and it was nothing but smiles for 60 grueling miles. Says Austin,
“Having participated in many different riding events, I can honestly say that the Grinduro has raised the bar for how a cycling event should be run! Not only was the course amazing, but the food and overall pre- and post-ride activities were incredibly fun! The views and scenery were incredible, the creative artists showing their crafts were great, the evening music provided awesome entertainment, and the overall scene is all that a participant could ask for. This is a must-do event!”
