Executive Director’s Report

With spring season well underway, over 1,400 student-athletes are currently enjoying the camaraderie and excitement of riding and racing on high school mountain bike teams in our NorCal, SoCal and Texas leagues. For more behind the scenes updates, please follow us on InstagramTwitter and Facebook.

Our efforts are paying off as we are seeing significant growth across all leagues and I am thrilled to welcome Wisconsin as the 11th and newest League to the NICA organization! With an anticipated 4,000 students and 1,300 licensed coaches this year, I guarantee we will hear many great stories and see photos that show how riding on a school based cycling team is improving the lives of all those involved.

We sent out a press release announcing the launch of our new league and even “unveiled” the Wisconsin League at this year’s Frostbike gathering in Minnesota at QBP headquarters. Take a read here! (http://mad.ly/9c4684?pact=20665219329&fe=1)

24 Hours in the Old Pueblo Summary

Building on the great experience had by participants last year, pro racers Rebecca Rusch, Todd Wells and Chloe Woodruff offered to serve as captains for teams comprised of three NICA student-athletes each to compete in the wildly popular 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo race held outside of Tucson, Arizona February 15-16. The event served as the kick-off to Rebecca’s 2014 SRAM Gold Rusch Tour and students from Arizona, SoCal, Colorado and Texas were selected from over 50 applicants who submitted essays, including one video, on why they should be selected.

“They rose to the occasion in a way that I never even dreamed.  They were so brave, so humble, such team players and really dug deep for themselves and the rest of the team.  I did the same.  I was exhausted, but while I was on course, I turned myself inside out to go faster for them.”  -Rebecca Rusch
